Biographical

Childhood

Keith Murphy was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1975. After his parent's divorce in 1982, he moved to the tiny farming community of Centerville, Pennsylvania. The oldest child in a single-mother household, Keith was often responsible for watching his younger siblings and for basic household chores. His first job was pumping gas at age 14. After an adolescence spent mucking out stalls, stacking hay bales, and fishing for brook trout, Keith returned to the Baltimore area and graduated from Dulaney High School in Timonium, Maryland.

Education

While working his way through college, Keith worked a wide variety of jobs, usually two or three at a time. In six years in the banking field, Keith went from being a teller to branch manager. Seven years spent in ballpark operations for the Orioles, a year spent as an electrician's apprentice, a year writing for a local sports weekly, and twelve years in the restaurant business. This variety of experience gave Keith a deep appreciation for hard work and an abiding faith in the American dream that with persistence and determination anything is possible.

After graduating magna cum laude from the University of Baltimore with a BA in political science, Keith obtained a position as a legislative assistant with the Maryland General Assembly. Working closely with his assigned state senator, Keith helped research and draft key legislation and resolve a wide variety of constituent issues. While not in session, Keith became a paid campaign manager. While in this position, Keith became determined to further his education and attended the University of Maryland's School of Community Planning, graduating with his master's degree in 2004.

Manchester

Nearing the completion of his degree and ready to start a career, Keith asked himself a very hard question: "Is Maryland the place to start a family and spend your life?" Bothered by the extremely high crime rate - Keith once found a murder victim in the alley behind his house - and a very aggressive tax system that not only taxes sales and income at the state level, but at the city level as well, Keith was forced to answer "No."

Keith set out to determine the best place in the United States for him to put down roots, and researched the state with the lowest taxes, the best environment, the lowest crime rate, and the highest quality of life. Time and again, the state at the top of the rankings was New Hampshire. So, master's degree in hand, Keith bid his family and friends farewell and moved 500 miles north in late 2004.

Professional

In 2005 Keith and his business partner Karl Beisel launched the New Hampshire Sports and Social Club, which provides young professionals recreational opportunities in a social atmosphere. The club has continued to thrive, expanding in the years since to Nashua and Portsmouth and growing from four teams in its inaugural season to 77 teams as of the Spring 2008 season. In 2007 Keith achieved his lifelong dream of opening his own restaurant, Murphy's Taproom, located in downtown Manchester. Filling the derelict and troubled Omega building, Murphy's Taproom has in the last year created 28 jobs while quickly becoming known for quality food and beverages in an inviting atmosphere. The Taproom recently completed an expansion that doubled its capacity.

Personal
